Meet Emilie

With a love for both science and the arts, I debated between a college major in nursing or graphic design. I chose to pursue a liberal arts undergraduate education in nursing and eventually took it all the way to the top, earning a PhD. Nursing was/is a career that I’ve loved, but I’ve stepped away for a season to be more present with my family, including four young children.

I’ve had a garden at each property I’ve called home during my adult life. As an Enneagram 1, growing food seemed to me the most worthy and practical choice. I limited myself to herbs and vegetables for several years, and I initially added flowers as a companion planting strategy. Flowers intended for the pollinators became flowers that brought me joy and helped me to appreciate beauty. Eventually, I found myself tilling up a large section of our 3-acre lot in Holland, MI, on a rented tractor without much of a plan (and an Enneagram 1 always has a plan).

Poppies + Peas was born out of a desire to create again, functioning as a small business as well as a passion project and creative outlet. Even better, there is published scientific research evidence demonstrating the importance of flowers! Flowers have an immediate impact on happiness, a long-term positive effect on mood, and aid in making connections. Purchasing local flowers is particularly important, as the average U. S. grocery store bouquet travels between 1,500 to over 4,000 miles in refrigerated planes, boats, and trucks before sale.

Poppies + Peas offers premium bouquet subscriptions and florals for dinner parties, celebrations, community events, businesses, and holiday decor. We grow all that we can manage on our own including thousands of specialty tulips each spring, and supplement with 100% local blooms to meet demand when necessary.

Contact us or visit the BLOOM SHOPPE for premium florals curated in fresh, textural + seasonally-inspired designs.

"We really enjoyed our May pickup at KIN! The flowers were beautiful and we look forward to renewing our subscription."

The four mini-farmhands don’t do much work (yet?), but they sure lend heart to the enterprise.
